Nationals 2005!

We have just returned from the 2005 National Concrete Canoe Competition held at Clemson University, South Carolina. We'd like to say, "Thank you" to the City of Clemson as well as everyone at the university for having such a spectacular event. It is truely a beautiful campus and the convenience of the layout of the campus was a nice change of pace from most events.

Fairmont State finished 12th overall in the competition out of 21 participating schools. Over 270 canoes were built this year by students around the country and we truely feel that it has been a privilage to represent our Virginias' Region. No school from West Virginia had ever participated in the national contest and no school from our region had placed as high as 12th in 10 years.
Our hats are off to the top three schools, in order: University of Wisconsin - Madison, Clemson University, and Michigan Tech. All three were very impressive, as well as the other canoes that participated. New teams are qualifying each year and it is our hope that all who debuted this year, walked away with a greater understanding of what this competition is all about. It is about being a team and it is about paying attention to every last detail in every part of the competition.
We do hope to come back even stronger next year and wish every team across the country luck at becoming the next regional champ! Better start next week!

Virginias Conference

We just got back from our regional competition held at Virginia Tech. The team has done it! We will be returning to the national competition held at Clemson June 25-27. The team worked very hard, putting in countless hours, and it paid off! Fairmont State took first place in every event during the competition including: Design Paper, Oral Presentation, Overall Product and the Races. We are very proud of our team and humbled to be able to represent this region again this year at nationals. We'd like to say, "Thank you" to our club's advisor, Tia Richardson and the numerous local sponsors who make our success possible. Our budget is less than 10% of many of the larger schools whom we compete against, showing that with hard work and determination, the "little guy" can navigate barriers and overcome. We cannot leave without saying a BIG thanks to Jay Whitt for the unprecedented assistance he has given us, there is no better mentor!
